Students Teach Students
Students help their peers navigate our information environment.
Hayes Freedom High School | Camas, WA
In June 2024, the 12th grade Civics class did a Media Mentorship project where the students taught each other during their class time. Half the group presented while the other half was the audience, and vice-versa.
Student presentations fell into seven categories: the SIFT steps (Stop, Investigate the Source, Find Better Coverage, and Trace Claims), AI, News and Information, and Democratic Principles.

When visiting presentations, students aimed to get a stamp from each category on their Media Mentorship Passport.

The next year, the 12th grade Civics class had the opportunity to present to two audiences. During the day, they taught the 11th grade US History class during their overlapping periods. That evening, students had the option to present to their family and school staff members.

To prepare for these projects, students did Media Mondays throughout the semester to learn the skills & concepts they need to teach others.
